Arts, Media & Entertainment · Career Technical Education

Culture becomes curriculum.

Function SKOOL is a four-year Career Technical Education (CTE) pathway in Arts, Media and Entertainment (AME), built for California high schools. Students learn the craft, the business and the live production of creative work, and they run real events at their own school.

The program

Two sides. Four tracks.

Students start on the Audio or Visual side, then go deep in a track. Every track has a clear lane, including for the student who wants to run the show rather than perform in it.

Audio side

Music & Recording Arts

DJing, beat making, recording and sound for real audiences.

Live Production & Event Management

Planning, staging, running and promoting live events. The lane for future producers, managers and promoters.

Visual side

Design

Graphic design and visual identity for real projects: flyers, brands, merchandise and campaigns.

Digital Communications

Photography, video, content, streaming and podcasting.

How it runs

Every year is a complete year.

Students help produce school events in every grade, taking on more responsibility as they grow. A student who leaves after any year leaves with real skills and real work to show.

9th grade

Crew

Foundations on the Audio or Visual side.

10th grade

Technician / Artist

Go deep in a primary track.

11th grade

Lead

Deepen the craft or add a second track.

12th grade

Producer

Capstone: students run a creative company.

Every year blendsCraftBusinessLive workPortfolio

Taught live and in person by a district teacher, supported by our curriculum, teacher training and demonstrations from working industry professionals.

Our goals

Built to fit how California schools work.

These are the standards we are designing to. Approvals are in progress.

  • Built to map to the state AME CTE pathways

Introductory, concentrator and capstone courses designed so students can finish as pathway completers.

  • Pursuing UC A-G approval

Courses written for University of California A-G review, primarily in the visual and performing arts.

  • Industry certifications under review

We are evaluating which industry-recognized certifications fit each track and will name them once they are in place.

  • Designed around funding districts already have

Built to fit Prop 28 arts and music funding, the CTE Incentive Grant (CTEIG) and federal Perkins V.

  • College and career connected

Working toward college credit pathways, and real portfolios students carry into school or work.

  • Day school and after school

A day-school pathway, plus an after-school version for expanded learning programs.

Why we built it

Music is the invitation.

Students already live inside music, media and events. Function SKOOL meets them there and turns that energy into practical skill: how the work is made, how the business runs, and how a live show actually comes together.

The program was founded by Alfred Torregano, a Los Angeles DJ, producer and event producer with three decades in the culture, and is a program of Torregano Creative Learning Company.

Practical knowledge creates possibility.

Learn. Create. Build. Belong.
